💡 A pie chart is used to represent the proportion of distinct values to their whole. It cannot represent a dashboard item group where one of the values has a negative measure.

Creating the component

Click on the Pie icon to add a pie chart to the dashboard and drag and drop the fields you want to view.

The configuration of the component is then done in the following order:

Fields of data items

The fields to be visualized are added by drag and drop in the following three main areas.

  • Values

  • Arguments

  • Series

Values

Data fields to analyze.

Selection of the "sales amount" data field.

Arguments

Set of data to be compared with each other according to the selected values.

Breakdown and comparison by item categories.

Series

Data field used to compare pie charts. An additional chart is created for each data item in the field that is dragged into the series.

Comparison of charts over two separate years.

Multiple data items

Multiple arguments

Adding arguments increases the granularity of their analysis, and therefore the number of pies in the chart. It is possible to drill down to aggregate the arguments according to the first in the list box. The detailed information of a pie chart is then displayed by clicking on it.

Selection of 2 arguments: "Sale Date (Year)" and "Sale Date (Quarter)". The drill down is not activated by default. The diagram then displays the pies corresponding to all the Quarter- Year combinations for the comparison of the sales.

Activating the drill down

The data from the first argument, "Sales Date (Year)", is now displayed by default.

Clicking on a pie chart area activates a filter based on the value of the first argument. The data for the next argument is then displayed according to this filter. Here, having clicked on the pie "2019", it displays the sales details for the year 2019.

Pie settings

The pie chart can be customized using the interaction and layout tool. Click on the cogwheel at the top right of the component to access the tool.

It is divided into 3 tabs:

  • Interactions

  • Layout

  • Filters

Interactions

The interaction settings allow the pie to interact with other dashboard components. The pie, like any other dashboard item, can be configured to filter dashboard data.

  • With a pie you can filter the graph according to arguments, series or points.

Layout

This tab allows you to customize the display of the component.

Common

This part allows to configure the title of the component.

  • Show title: Hide or show title. It is displayed by default.

  • Modify title: Rename the component and values.

Content arrangement

This section allows you to configure the positioning of multiple diagrams.

  • Auto arrange

  • Arrange in colums

  • Arrange in rows

If you choose columns or rows, you have to select the number of them.

Labels

This section allows you to configure the display of the diagram's labels and tooltips.

  • Data labels: Information to be displayed on the data labels of the diagram.

  • Data labels position: Position of the labels in relation to the diagram data.

  • Tooltips: Information to display in the tooltips of the diagram data.

Style

This part allows you to modify the visual aspect of the diagram: pie or donut diagram.

Color management in a pie

Basically, the argument fields influence the coloring of the chart which can be changed.

  • Global colors: Change the colors of a set of values for all dashboard components.

  • Local colors: Change the colors of a set of values for this dashboard component only.

Filters

This tab allows you to add a simple or combined filter on the data displayed in the charts of this component and has no influence on the other dashboard components.

  • Adding a filter allows you to filter the data displayed in the chart, it has no influence on the other dashboard components.
