💡 The charts are used to compare data in two ways.

By chronology

By category

Creating the component

Click on the Chart icon to add a chart to the dashboard and drag and drop the fields you want to view.

The configuration of the component is then done in the following order:

Fields of data items

The fields to be visualized are added by drag and drop in the following three main areas:

  • Values

  • Arguments

  • Series

Values

Y Axis

Numerical value to analyze in the chart. It corresponds to the data items that will determine the coordinates of the points on the ordinate axis of the chart (Y Axis).

Example : Sales analysis

Arguments

X Axis

Data items that provide the values to be displayed on the abscissa (X Axis).

Example: Sales analysis by product category

Series

Z Axis

Data items that allows you to create several series of charts: one series per distinct value of the data items

Example : Analysis of sales by category and for each year

Multiple data items

Multiple values

Multiple numerical values can be displayed on the same chart. This allows for a direct comparison of 2 indicators.

When we have multiple values we can move these values in 2 possible ways:

The first way keeps the display we have defined (here in curve). The second way resets the default chart display (here in bar).

Panes

Panes allow you to create views with different numerical values sharing the same X axis.

One or more panes can be added to the chart by clicking on the icon below:

The added panes are placed one below the other.

Multiple arguments

Adding arguments increases the granularity of the analysis. The values on the X axis correspond to all possible combinations of arguments.

It is possible to drill down to aggregate the arguments according to the first in the list box. The detail of the information of a bar is then displayed by clicking on it. You can add as many levels of detail as you wish.

Example: Adding 2 arguments: "Sales date (Year)" and "Sales date (Month)". The drill down is not activated by default. The chart then displays the bars of all the Month-Year combinations for the average basket.

Activating the drill

The data for the first argument, "Sales Date (Year)", is now displayed by default.

Clicking on a bar in the chart activates a filter based on the value of the first argument. The data for the next argument is then displayed according to this filter. Here, clicking on the "2019" bar displays the detail of the sales per month for the year 2019.

Multiple series

Adding multiple series allows you to multiply the series of points displayed in the chart. There will be as many series of points as there are possible combinations of data items in each series.

Example : Annual balance sheet of the sales of bicycles and other equipment: comparison of the budget VS the actual values

Chart settings

The chart can be customized using the interaction and layout tool. Click on the cogwheel at the top right of the component to access the tool.

It is divided into 3 tabs:

  • Interactions

  • Layout

  • Filters

Interactions

The interaction settings allow the chart to interact with other dashboard components. The chart, like any other dashboard item, can be configured to filter dashboard data.

Dimensions options

With a chart you can filter the graph according to arguments, series or points.

Filter by arguments

The dashboard data will be filtered according to the selected argument.

Example : by clicking on "United States", the grid is filtered on the store country "United States".

Filter by series

The dashboard data will be filtered according to the selected series.

Example: by clicking on the "Bikes" category of one of the bars of the chart, the detail grid is filtered on the "Bikes" category but not on the country.

Filter by points

The dashboard data will be filtered according to the argument and the series selected in the chart. Example: by clicking on the category "Bikes" for the store country "Canada", the grid is filtered on the category "Bikes" and the store country "Canada".

Interactivity settings

Restrict the interactions applied to this component

  • Ignore master filters: If this option is selected for a component, this component will not be filtered according to the user selections on the other components.

Layout

This tab allows you to customize the display of the component.

  • Limit of visible points: Allows you to limit the number of data displayed. A scroll bar appears to view the rest of the axis.

Y-Axis settings

This part allows to modify the display of the vertical axis.

💡 In case several data panes are displayed, it is possible to customize the Y axis of each one independently of the others.

  • Always show zero level: Starts the axis at point 0. If this box is unchecked, the axis will be centered on the displayed values.

  • Reverse: Reverse the display of values along the Y-axis.

  • Show grid lines: If unchecked, hides the lines of the chart.

  • Show Y-Axis: If unchecked, hides the text elements placed to the left of the Y-axis.

  • Show title: Displays a customizable title to the left of the Y-axis.

  • Logarithmic scale: Display the values according to a logarithmic scale. The scale can be selected among 3 in the list box on the right.

  • Format type: Unit format to display.

  • Unit: Unit scale.

  • Precision: Number of digits after the decimal point.

  • Currency: Currency to display in case of a monetary unit.

  • Culture: Country of the currency if selected.

  • Position of the legend: Position the legend according to 22 proposed locations.

Series type

This part allows you to customize the display mode of all the data of the chart.

The types of series available

Bar

  • They are used to compare a value according to different categories.

  • They show the contribution of each individual category to the overall.

  • They allow for a comparison of the percentage contribution of each individual category to the overall.

Point / Line

  • Presents the data as individual numerical points.

  • Connect the numerical points together with a line for each series of data.

  • They can be used to show a trend in the contribution of each category.

  • They are used to show the trend in the percentage contribution of each category.

  • This representation connects the data points using vertical and horizontal bars, showing a stepwise progression.

  • This representation connects the points to each other using curves.

Area

  • This representation connects the numerical points with line segments and colors the area between the X axis and the line.

  • It shows the contribution of each individual category to the whole. It connects the numerical points using line segments and colors the area between the X axis and the line.

  • This representation shows the percentage contribution of each individual category to the total.

  • This representation connects the data points with vertical and horizontal bars, showing a stepwise progression, and colors the area between the line and the X axis.

  • This representation connects the points with curves and colors the area between the curve and the X axis.

  • This representation shows a trend in the contribution of each individual category to the total. It connects the points with a curve and colors the area between each curve and the previous one.

  • This representation shows the trend in the percentage contribution of each individual category.

Range

Range plots are generally used to show variations over time of measurements such as temperature, price... Each range represents the delta between 2 measurements, either as a bar or as an area.

For range charts, you must provide 2 numerical values to be displayed: the min value (value 1) and the max value (value 2). Thus, when you select a chart of type Range, you must configure the data items below:

  • Range bar Side-by-Side: Similar to the bar chart, except that here each bar represents the range between 2 values.

  • Range area: Similar to the zone diagram, except that here the zone is colored according to the range between 2 values.

Bubble

  • Bubble: The bubble chart allows you to visualize data in 3 dimensions.

The points in a bubble chart are configured with 2 data items:

- Value: coordinate of the point on the Y axis.

- Weight: size of the point.

When you select a bubble chart, the data items configuration area will look like this:

Financial

Financial charts are generally used to represent the evolution of stock prices.

  • Blue / Black: if the price at the end of the previous period is lower than the price at the end of the current period

  • Red: if the price at the end of the previous period is higher than the price at the end of the current period

  • High-low-close:

When you select a High-low-close chart, the data items configuration area will look like this:

- High: the maximum value of the period. (the upper point of the bar).

- Min: the minimum value of the period. (the lower point of the bar).

- Close: the closing value of the period. (the horizontal dash on the bar).

  • Candle stick:

When you select a High-low-close chart, the data items configuration area will look like this:

- Open: the opening value of the period.

- High: the maximum value of the period. (the upper point of the bar).

- Min: the minimum value of the period. (the lower point of the bar).

- Close: the closing value of the period. (the horizontal dash on the bar).

  • Stock :

When you select a High-low-close chart, the data items configuration area will look like this:

- Open: the opening value of the period.

- High: the maximum value of the period. (the upper point of the bar).

- Min: the minimum value of the period. (the lower point of the bar).

- Close: the closing value of the period. (the horizontal dash on the bar).

Color management in a chart

Basically, the argument fields do not affect the coloring of the chart. To color a chart according to the argument click on the argument, and color according to gradient.

  • Global colors: Change the colors of a set of values for all dashboard components.

  • Local colors: Change the colors of a set of values for this dashboard component only.

Filters

  • Adding a filter allows you to filter the data displayed in the chart, it has no influence on the other dashboard components.

Specific settings by value

You can configure the display of each value in the chart by clicking on this icon. The settings screen is composed of three tabs: Series type, Common options, Point labels options.

Series type

This tab allows you to change the display type only for the data field to be customized. The display of the other data fields is not affected. The selection of a new display gives an immediate preview of the result.

💡 In the case of a multiple value display on the chart, this allows each value field to be clearly distinguished by a different display type from the other value fields.

Common options

💡 In the case of a multiple value display on the chart, this allows to differentiate values that are not represented at the same scale. The values on each Y-axis, on the left and right of the chart, will then be automatically formatted for correct display of each value field.

  • Plot on secondary axis: Moves the Y-axis of the values to the right of the chart.

  • Ignore empty points:

  • Show point markers:

Point label options

Labels allow you to display a summary of information in a small box near the values.

  • Point label options

    • Content: Show a label for the values of the field.

💡It is possible to display one or more items from the category, series, or value.

    • Overallping mode: Displays the labels according to the selected overlap.

    • Orientation : Display the labels vertically. By default, they are displayed horizontally.

  • Bar options

    • Show for zero values

    • Position : Show labels outside (above) the data or inside (overlapped).

Conditional formatting

You can use conditional formatting to highlight charts such as bars, lines, areas and bubbles.

The following series options support conditional formatting:

  • Bar

  • Point/line

  • Area

  • Range

  • Bubble

You can use the following data in the conditional format calculations:

  • Measures in the Values section.

  • Dimensions in the Arguments/Series section.

  • Measures Hidden data items section.

Below is a chart showing the sales made by country.

We can add a format rule that specifies the appearance of the chart according to one or more conditions.

To do this :

  • Either right click on the field that will be used to define the conditional format rule, click on "add a format rule".

  • Or right click on the chart component, and click on "Edit rules".

Example

In the window below you can apply one of the predefined colors or define a custom color to the data items that meet the defined condition. You can choose to apply this format rule to points or lines.

  • Point: a rule is applied to data points such as bars, points and bubbles

  • Line / Area: a rule applies to lines and areas

If you select Line / Area, the formatting rule is applied to the line when at least one line point meets the rule condition.

In my example, I want to display the year is equal to 2020 data in red. I can also choose if I want to apply this format to the point or to the line:

Result:

If I want to highlight the whole row when one of its values exceeds 800M, I configure the rule as below. The field label allows you to configure the legend that will be displayed if the option is checked.

Coloring

If the elements do not meet the applied condition (here sales >45M), Biwee colors these elements in light grey.

To restore the colors of the series, apply the coloring by tint to your field in the series section.

For more details, see the following pages.

Financial charts are not colored in a standard way. The chart is colored according to the following rules:
